Our group consists of three Year 10 students who attend Edgecumbe College. Our first member is Tonisha Bennett from Otakiri. She is interested in this topic to see how different it is in both situations; for those people who live in a retirement home for those who do not. The second member is Kaydee Dobson of Matata. She is interested in conversing with the elderly because they have fascinating stories to tell and share with us all if only we gave them the time. The last member is Bailey West from Edgecumbe. She is interested in helping elderly people because they are very wise and experienced and youth have a lot to learn from them.

Helping the Kaumatu

At Edgecumbe College there is a special Year 10 or 4th form class that touches on a lot of  important world problems. We have to do a year long local inquiry that involves us in investigating and helping something or someone locally.
We have chosen to do our topic on elderly people, retirement and all life involving that. We think it will be an interesting topic to do as we are under the impression that elderly people are full of knowledge, highly skilled and are very wise and we should look up to them but we don’t.  So we want to know…
How Retirement Villages function?
What is the common age that people retire?
What do people do at retirement homes?
What assistance do they need?
How much does it cost?
How can we help them?
How can we use their under-utilised skills and knowledge?
What do they want?

What are career possibilities for working in the field?
What are some of the legal requirements that retirement villages have to meet?
How does the new kiwi saver scheme affect the system?
We plan to learn everything there is to know about the retirement and elderly system. We wish to become experts on this area. We will use this untapped resource to help youth appreciate the elderly for years to come, well after we are gone. We will have to wait and see how we decide to do this. We have some rough ideas but nothing has been finalized. Once we have talked to some more people and collected some data we will know what to do. If anybody has any information that they would think be helpful for us or would like to answer any of our questions, please just contact us. We will keep you updated.
Thank-you
