Save our Species - by Samantha-Rae McVicker & Marie McCoy

I want to make a difference and raise awareness, maybe get people involved. I want our endangered species to be around for my children and generations to come because I know that I wish that extinct species were alive now for me to see. Samantha-Rae McVicker- I have always felt strongly about the health and well-being of animals and it honestly breaks my heart when I hear about ‘cruelty to animal’ stories. It can really make me cry and I always wonder WHY people choose to do it. Is it because they find it funny? I really don’t know, but it’s not fair on the animals that have to go through the torture of their ‘fun little game’ and not get any justice!

We are sick of watching the TV or reading the newspaper and seeing what happens to animals and how they are being treated. Animals deserve the same respect humans do. If someone killed a human they would go to prison, but is the justice the same for an animal…? NO, some people don’t go to jail for abusing and/or killing animals. It appears that most people just get ‘let off’! Why do people abuse animals and/or are cruel them? That’s the ultimate question!
Since we can’t bring justice to those who are cruel to animals we will try and save the species that are endangered. We will be researching endangered animals in the Bay of Plenty and once we know enough, we will be in search of people who WE can help by saving that particular species. We want to help preserve our native animals and we know that without human help, they are struggling to survive in a world where their environment is rapidly changing. Our land used to be abundant with beautiful creatures but we have abused their land and now only few survive. People have only recently realized what we are loosing and are trying to make a difference. We hope that by the end of this year we would have helped at least one endangered species. That species will hopefully be safe for a number of years to come and be non-dependant on human support. We would like to raise the awareness so people will know how little things can help.

Developing group strengths at our Learning Retreat

Samantha-Rae is shown on the left of this image participating in the same activity as Marie but with a different group. These photos were taken at our Learning Retreat in Rotorua.
The retreat brings together gifted and talented students from throughout the school (juniors and seniors) to help them learn more about their strengths and weaknesses and how to use their strengths to benefit others, not just themselves.
